NStar Seeks High-Tech Fix for 'Stray Voltage

"NStar Seeks High-Tech Fix for 'Stray Voltage'"
Boston Globe (02/02/06) Howe, Peter J.

NStar and Boston officials will use a truck equipped with advanced electrical detectors, cameras, and global positioning system technology to help identify electricity leaks. Stray electricity has killed four city dogs during the last several years and is a threat to public safety. A joint task force established by both the city and the utility is pleased with the system's progress. The system has correctly identified electric problems during technology trials conducted the last 10 days. However, NStar Senior Vice President Joseph R. Nolan noted that the company has still not decided whether to purchase the system from Sarnoff Corp. Nolan did add that the utility likes the system's capabilities. Inspectors typically employ detection wands to identify electricity leaks, but this method exposes them to danger because they have to walk to potentially deadly areas. Nolan noted that the mobile detection system would prove especially useful when snow, salt, and water are on the ground. News of the potential purchase of the system is pleasing to blind residents who are concerned about their guide dogs walking into areas where stray voltage is present.
