Welcome to Fall, 2009. It’s over 100 degrees in Phoenix this week and Minneapolis and Boston got snow last week. Wherever you are, we hope you are having “normal” weather, whatever that is. We hope you agree that it is normal, as in “expected,” that you are looking for some very strong Successful Practices from this month’s EDNS.
Each Successful Practice this time around is a tribute to industry professionals willing to dedicate years to their craft for the benefit of others. See the list below. Success Bytes offers up Joe Eastman’s wisdom - a multi-career success with insights from HR, gas operations, and now executive coaching and consulting. Then there are the "highs" and "lows" in the news column. Our "high" is a story about a natural gas-powered commercial airliner. Natural gas-filled shale and its impact (not only on the U.S., but globally) is the "low". In between are interesting stories gleaned from the energy-related news from all across the U.S. We hope you enjoy the whole issue.
Successful Practices in EDNS this month:
* Flash Fire Safety Suit Has Built In Harness - Protects for Eight Seconds
* You Rely on IT, HR, Engineering, and Safety Professionals…what about Security?
* Overcoming “I’ve done this a thousand times” Electric Safety Challenge
* Success Byte: Winning People Over Means Being Approachable, Instilling a Sense of Shared Values, and Demonstrating Credibility

If variety is the spice of life, then this issue of EDNS is “hot.” Well not quite “Del ScorchO” sauce hot, but it does contain a lot of useful information. We bring you Successful Practices on how to improve your third party damage outreach, how to get much better leak detection accuracy and get rid of CGIs, and the value of online career fairs as well. Then there is career management advice from Paul Preketes, a former electric power plant manager and SVP of gas operations for Consumers Energy (just retired). Preketes adds to the recipes for success offered up in the continuing Success Bytes series. Additionally, there’s lots of industry news too: New Arc Flash gear, electricity from waste oil, natural gas supply optimism, and more…. EDNS thanks Quality Contracting for being our sponsor; their name says it all.
Successful Practices in EDNS this month:
- Leverage the Excavation Safety Guide to Provide Damage Prevention Information—Can Be Customized—Its Time to Order
- Finding Gas Leaks You’ve Missed for Years with New Leak Detection Gear
- Online Career Fair for Nuclear Career Prospects

Pond scum, tree houses, remote controls, and Visa Cash cards are just some of the unlikely, but significant stories related to our business this month in EDNS. We have an interesting interview with Carl Porter, former utility executive, now marketing director for Itron Gas Solutions. His story is not only about his own career, but also his excitement about being in a place to create and deliver exactly the kind of products—in this case a remote disconnect for gas meters—he always wanted during his utility career. EDNS thanks Carl and Itron for their sponsorship this month as well. Add in great advice from two DOT representatives concerning public awareness programs that work and how customers are earning cash rebates from TXU’s customer choice programs and this becomes another issue full of information and ideas for you.
Successful Practices in EDNS this month:
* Remote Gas Meter Disconnect System Now a Reality, Courtesy of Itron
* Communicating Effectively With Key Utility and Pipeline Audiences
* Customers Earn Millions Through TXU Energy Reward Programs
* Success Byte: Driven to Make a Difference: A Two-Part Career

Independence is one of the themes for the July issue of EDNS. Maybe it was celebrating the 4th of July that brought the theme to mind. The EDNS News Section has Global Green Cars closer to delivering a $25,000 all electric commuter car, plus an SUV and a truck for independence from oil. GE says it can create the gear for homes to make them energy neutral and Tenaska’s Taylorville Clean Coal Plant will be able to capture most of its CO2.
In the Successful Practices Section, CMS wants to be independent of apprenticeship drop outs, ComEd wants to be independent of injuries, and INTREN wants to make gas and electric coiled stock cutting independent of human and property damage. There is a lot more in this month’s edition, including career observations from Bob Schacht, former COO of Nipsco, Consultant to ComEd and now Vice President of Mead. As he suggests, “Watch and Learn”. Not bad advice for readers of EDNS. Happy Independence!
Successful Practices in EDNS this month:
* Strategies to Reduce Dropouts from Apprenticeship Programs
* Safer Cutting of Coiled Pipe and Conduit
* ComEd Uses Worker Alteration Log to Enhance Safety and Reduce Equipment Damage
* Success Byte: Watch and Learn—Career Advice from One Who Knows

Tweet! Tweet! is part of two stories in this month’s EDNS. Electric utilities and job recruiting companies are using the social networking site Twitter to communicate with their customers. Since Twitter messages are short and EDNS provides you with more than headlines…real solutions for you, don’t expect a Tweet from EDNS just yet. Our Success Bytes feature this month is from Patty Walker, senior vice president, Ohio and Kentucky gas operations for Duke Energy and second vice chair of the Midwest Energy Association. She has some very specific career development suggestions. Our successful practices are timely…Storm Damage Logistics, Meeting Conservation Improvement Requirements and Cutting Tree Maintenance Costs. We hope you learn something useful; that is always our goal.
Successful Practices in EDNS this month:
- Storm Damage—Using Outside Help in Providing Crew Support Logistics
- Reducing Energy Consumption and Demand with Creativity
- Decreasing Unscheduled Tree Trimming Trips Saves Hundreds of Thousands
- Success Byte: Being True to Yourself Means Your Company Gets the Best from You
